Ninth Annual Flamenco Festival at GALA With artists from Spain and the United States Nov 8 – 17, 2013
Washington, D.C. – GALA’s acclaimed flamenco festival is here for its ninth year with Honorary Producers Lynne and Joseph Horning. Fuego Flamenco IX is an exploration of traditional flamenco, its breadth and diversity through contemporary expressions, and its impact in the United States. This year’s attractions include the world premiere of One Plus One created by Edwin Aparicio and Aleksey Kulikov for D.C.’s Flamenco Aparicio Dance Company, and the United States premiere of Templanza, choreographed and performed by the sensual duo José Jurado with dancer Isabel Rodríguez of the Fundación Conservatorio Flamenco Casa Patas of Madrid. In addition, the festival will include Flamenco en Familia, free interactive demonstrations of various aspects of flamenco for children and families. New this year is a special screening of the documentary Sobre las Olas – A History of Flamenco in the U.S. The expanded festival is made possible with generous support from Lynne and Joseph Horning, the Horning Family Fund of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C., Spain Arts & Culture, and Spain-USA Foundation.
FLAMENCO APARICIO DANCE COMPANY
Fuego Flamenco IX opens with the world premiere of One Plus One, choreographed and directed by Edwin Aparicio and Aleksey Kulikov. This new work features dancers Edwin Aparicio, Norberto Chamizo from Madrid, Spain, Genevieve Guinn from Austin, Texas, and Anna Menéndez from Baltimore, Maryland, and singer Amparo Heredia “La Repompilla” from Malaga, Spain. Performances are on Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9 at 8 pm and Sunday, November 10 at 2 pm.
The personal lives of Aparicio and Kulikov serve an inspiration for One Plus One. After living together for over a decade, they were legally married in July of this year. Understanding a
Olé ! L’Andalousie débarque dans le Sud-Est ! Dans le cadre des représentations de l’été à Cannes, la ville accueille une compagnie de flamenco mêlant musiciens et danseurs sévillans. Créée par l’un des plus fameux tablaos (cabaret où sont données les représentations de flamenco) madrilène, Casa Patas, elle est considérée comme l’une référence de la scène actuelle. Sur les planches du Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, la compagnie interprétera son spectacle « Templanza – Una Noche en Casa Patas ». Pour une fois qu’elle se produit hors de ses propres murs, l’occasion sera belle pour le public azuréen de voir une danse flamenca traditionnelle portée par des danseurs généreux et à l’énergie communicative. A noter également : une démonstration et initiation à la danse sévillane, élaborées par l’association « Pimienta Cultura Flamenca » et le groupe Giraldillo – ambassadeurs de l’esprit de fête propre à Séville – se tiendront juste avant le spectacle. De quoi, peut-être, vous donner envie de taper des pieds.
